Style Directions, owned by leading fashion and beauty guru, Carol Spenser, continues to forge the way ahead for image consultancy in the 21st Century. Established in 1991, Style Directions has grown into the UK's most influential style company providing a much-needed link between the worlds of fashion and image consultancy.

"When I launched the business in the early 90's", says Carol, "there was little or no fashion advice available from the retailers or media for 'real' women. On the other hand, image consultants, who understand bodyshapes, colourings, etc had little or no idea about current fashion.

With my background in both fashion/beauty marketing and image consulting, my aim was to provide the public with current personalised advice which could be updated seasonally, whilst also targeting the retailers to improve staff training programmes and the media to promote a more realistic approach to fashion features".

With the glut of makeover shows on TV and abundance of fashion/beauty advice columns in newspapers and magazines today, it is worth remembering that Carol Spenser's 'Style Counsel', presented to the BBC in 1992, was the first ever makeover concept to take into account the subject's shape, lifestyle, age, personality, budget, family, friends etc. As the most popular strand on 'Good Morning', it ran for two years and produced many imitations and spin-offs.

Similarly, Carol Spenser's 'Fashion Counsel' feature, launched in Woman's Journal in 1992, was the first ever fashion advice column (some months covering five pages); consequently it won her a nomination for the coveted Columnist of the Year Award 1994 for being "the only fashion writer today with useful advice, a degree of realism and a sense of humour!"

In 2002, Carol was awarded the Federation of Image Consultants highest award (TINA) for her outstanding contribution to the industry.
